The Problem With Good Intentions
Most environmental programmes in schools teach children about climate, ecosystems, and planetary boundaries. Then they stop.
The curriculum ends. The learning fades. Life carries on.
For Katie Patrick, Australian-American environmental engineer and climate action designer this gap between knowledge and action felt like a missed opportunity. She wanted familiesânot just kidsâto do something. To compost their food waste. To shift their electricity use. To measure their own carbon footprint.
Building the tools to make this happen used to feel impossible. Not because the ideas were bad, but because the engineering was brutal.
Then AI arrived.
From Architectâs Bills to Midjourney Prompts
When Katie first imagined a family-focused property development concept, she needed visual proof. Architects typically charge thousands of dollars for renderings. Months-long timescales.
In 2023, she tried Midjourney.
Within minutes, she had the image she neededâexactly as sheâd imagined it. A central courtyard bathed in rainbow light. Pastel Swedish design. Eco-friendly and modern. The images went viral. I remember them. Thousands of likes. Suddenly, she had increased her followers tenfold. A following built on the back of a tool that would have been financially out of reach six months earlier.
âI was just so hooked,â she remembers.
She spent six weeks exploring. She taught herself prompt engineering. The novelty wore offâas viral trends doâbut sheâd learned something crucial. AI wasnât here to replace her vision. It was here to speed up the realisation of her vision.
Building a Dashboard in 12 Hours
Her real proof point came later.
Katie wanted to offer families a way to track their home electricity use in real time. She imagined a dashboard where they could log in, connect their utility data, and see their carbon footprint calculated against Californiaâs live grid emissions.
Traditionally, this is expensive work. A software engineer might charge $50,000â$100,000+ for such a platform. Timeline: several months.
Katie sat down with ChatGPT. Sheâd learned computer skillsânot advanced coding (that is her humble opinion), but enough to understand what was possible. She built it in one day. Twelve hours straight. No breaks.
What AI did: Provided the code blocks and troubleshooting guidance.
What Katie did: Understood the architecture, stitched it together, debugged the errors, created the user experience.
The result? A fully functional platform where families can:
Log in securely
Connect their electricity account via API
See their CO2 consumption calculated in real time
Understand when their grid is cleanest (spoiler: California is solar-heavy during the day, dirtier at night - but not coal dirty Katie was quick to add)
âFor 10 years in Silicon Valley, Iâve been hamstrung,â Katie says. âEither Iâm not smart enough with computers, or I have to raise loads of money, or I find a business partner. Suddenly, those mountains were gone.â
Earth Doctors: Education + Action
But hereâs where Katieâs insight gets really interesting.
Building tools is not the bottleneck. Enrolment is.
Earth Doctors is a 12-week school programme designed for parents, teachers, or community volunteers. Each week focuses on an environmental themeâcompost, energy, water, waste. There are lessons. There are activities.
But unlike traditional environmental education, every lesson ends with a real household action.
Hereâs how it works:
Week on composting. Kids learn about anaerobic digestion and methane. They colour in pictures of microbes. Then they build a âmethane monsterââfood waste sealed in a bag with a methane sensor attached. They watch the sensor beep and turn red as gas builds up. They smell the difference between sealed food waste and proper compost.
The visceral experience changes behaviour. Parents stop throwing food scraps in landfill. They measure the change. They repeat it.
Katie piloted the programme with 20 families. Some ran it as an after-school club. Others integrated it into class time. A few parents now charge families a small fee, turning it into a paid extracurricular activity. One teacher delivers it every Thursday.
Itâs a modular system. Families use it however fits their context.
Butâand this mattersâsuccess wasnât about having a slick curriculum. It was about conviction and follow-through.
Why AI Didnât Solve the Hard Problem
After launching Earth Doctors, Katie expected rapid uptake.
It didnât happen.
The tools were elegant. The activities were engaging. The data was compelling.
What was missing? Enrolment stories. Trust. Visibility. The narrative that made families believe this was worth their time.
AI had solved the product problem. It couldnât solve the people problem.
âThe hard thing,â Katie explains, âis to enroll lots of people to use tools on a consistent basis. Building the tool is not the heavy lift. The hard bit is developing a system that attracts the attention of thousands of people, convinces them that itâs good, and gets them to psychologically sign upânot just click a button, but actually believe in it.â
Sheâs now in local government meetings. City councils. School district boards. Energy utility forums.
Sheâs pitching. Building relationships. Creating a narrative around Earth Doctors that goes beyond marketing into community dialogue.
This is the work AI cannot do. But it has gifted her the time to get out and do this.
The Real Lesson: AI + Humans, Not AI or Humans
Katieâs approach reveals something important about AI in sustainability work.
AI is not a replacement for change-making. Itâs an accelerator for the technical scaffolding around it.
Sheâs used AI to:
Prototype visual concepts quickly
Write curriculum at scale
Build platforms in hours, not months
Finish half-baked projects gathering dust
She hasnât used it to:
Convince families to compost
Navigate local government bureaucracy
Build trust with school districts
Measure real behavioural change in households
That last one is critical. Katie measures before and after. Compost week happens. A survey goes out. Intervention happens (the methane monster, parent events, takeaway tools). A month later, another survey.
âDid composting go up? By how much? Whatâs the next step?â
This is measurement-driven sustainability work. Itâs human. It requires showing up.
A Different Approach to Sustainability Scale
Most organisations chase viral moments and brand-building.
Katieâs focus is narrower and deeper. Sheâs mapping systemsâthe local government structures, school district budgets ($300+ million annually in her area), utility governance, parent networks.
Sheâs asking: Where are the leverage points?
A city council with a $2 million sustainability budget. An energy utility with public board meetings. A school district with a captive audience of 500+ families.
These arenât sexy. But theyâre real.
âBefore, I was really into brand and marketing,â she says. âNow Iâm just like, âItâs got to affect the number. What do I have to come up with to make that happen?ââ
AI helped her build faster. But it was her willingness to sit in the meetings and make the asks that got traction.
What Turning Green Is Watching

1. Democratisation of building. Non-traditional coders are now creating real infrastructure. The barrier to prototyping is collapsing.

3. Measurement-driven change. The organisations doing real work (not performative work) are the ones obsessed with before-and-after metrics. AI helps with data collection and analysis.
4. Hybrid teams. The future isnât AI replacing humans. Itâs clarity about what each does best. AI accelerates iteration. Humans build the social infrastructure that sustains change.
Whatâs Next
Katieâs now scaling Earth Doctors across school districts, aiming for thousands of families.
Sheâs building an online schoolâthe School of Climate Action Designâwhere sustainability leaders learn her systems methodology: behavioural psychology, action design, storytelling, marketing funnels, measurement.
Sheâs not stopping at school programmes. Sheâs mapping how to move from 20 pilot families to 500, then to systemic policy change.
And sheâs still using AIâto draft curriculum, prototype platforms, generate ideas, troubleshoot problems.
But the real work? Thatâs human. Itâs always human.
The exciting news? For the first time in a decade, sheâs not waiting for permission, funding, or technical wizards. Sheâs just building it.
AI made that possible. Conviction made it real.

Katie Patrick is an Australian-American environmental engineer and climate action designer. Sheâs author of the books How to Save the World and Zerowastify and hosts a podcast where she investigates the academic research in environmental psychology.
Katie specializes in the design of getting people to change. She applies gamification and behavioral science in a way that dramatically increases the adoption of environmental programs and has worked with organizations including UNEP, NASA JPL, Stanford University, U.S. State Department, Google, University of California, Magic Leap, and the Institute for the Future.
Katie started UrbanCanopy.io, a map-based application that uses satellite imaging of urban heat islands and vegetation cover to encourage urban greening and cooling initiatives. She is also the co-founder of Energy Lollipop, a Chrome extension and outdoor screen project that shows the electric gridâs CO2 emissions in real-time.
She was CEO of the VC-funded green-lifestyle magazine Green Pages Australia and was appointed environmental brand ambassador by the Ogilvy Earth advertising agency for Volkswagen, Lipton Tea and Wolfblass Wines.
